I would recommend against using a multihome server. Having both a public and private interface is a huge security risk. If you are going to use a firewall, then why not have it on the private side of your network and NAT it on the firewall or configure the firewall to allow it to monitor your external servers. Windows 2000 server with SP2 works fine. Dell or Compaq are good, but you really do not need a powerful device. I would not recommend a firewall software to install on this server. Instead get a firewall device or similar appliance. Of course recommendations could be constrained based on your budget.
