What do you mean by public? Is it DMZ, Internet, or WAN? If you mean the
Internet, then I 100% agree with Mr. Jon. And why do you want to monitor
the public? Other than the ISP router, I do not think there is anything
for you to worry about. Please clarify. Good luck

I would recommend against using a multihome server. Having both a public
and private interface is a huge security risk. If you are going to use a
firewall, then why not have it on the private side of your network and NAT
it on the firewall or configure the firewall to allow it to monitor your
external servers. Windows 2000 server with SP2 works fine. Dell or Compaq
are good, but you really do not need a powerful device. I would not
recommend a firewall software to install on this server. Instead get a
firewall device or similar appliance. Of course recommendations could be
constrained based on your budget.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Recommendations for Whats up server

I would like some input from the whatsup forum that would help me decide
what type of server and Os I should buy for my whatsup gold application,
and any recommendations on firewall software that would work good with
whatsup.

This will be a dedicated server for whatsup using an external modem for
dialing out for alerts
I will have 2 network cards in for monitoring both the public and private
network
I'm using version 5.01 but will upgrade to 8 during the next year.
May be using for a ftp and tftp site

Any input?

thanks!
