Title: RE: [WhatsUp Forum] Recommendations for Whats up server

George, I at one time did exactly what you are thinking of doing and logically it is the easiest to comprehend. But you are leaving yourself wide open to having your entire network at risk. (and it's only a matter of time before the hackers are able to use your WUG server, or any other servers you have setup this way to bridge to your internal network) If at all possible use only 1 NIC card and have your firewall/router direct WUG traffic to your external interfaces.

If your firewall and router are configured correctly from your internal network you should be able to explicitly say that your WUG server at say IP address 10.10.1.5 is able to PING, get status of HTTP, POP3, and other services from your server on the DMZ at say 64.2.3.4.

WUG 8 does not use a lot of processing power, so older machines will work fine. I'm running it off of a Compaq Desk Pro PII - 350 with 256mb ram, Widows 2000 Pro and a 10 gb hard disk.  WUG generally is sending ICMP packets (a ping) and waiting for a response. This is low level IP stuff and takes very little processing power. I am monitoring about 200 different machines and each machine has 2-3 specific services I monitor and polling only takes about 30 seconds. Most of the delay is to network latency.

It sounds like you are in the same position I was in only a short while ago I would be happy to discuss what we did here.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Recommendations for Whats up server

I would like some input from the whatsup forum that would help me decide
what type of server and Os I should buy for my whatsup gold application,
and any recommendations on firewall software that would work good with whatsup.

This will be a dedicated server for whatsup using an external modem for
dialing out for alerts
I will have 2 network cards in for monitoring both the public and private
network
I'm using version 5.01 but will upgrade to 8 during the next year.
May be using for a ftp and tftp site

Any input?

thanks!
