... or take Dan's suggestion and have a little script using snmputil reset
the relevant counter. If you want to retain the error status until after
someone has looked at it, have a little script ask for the router name
and/or IP address and reset the status via snmputil manually on demand.

The question is, what counter to monitor for a treshold. This depends upon
what sort of link you are using (Frame, ATM, T1, etc.). If I remember
correct, there is a counter for interface transitions. This is what we used
to monitor with AT&T circuits. Some of them were going up and down and up
and ... quite frequently without triggering alarms.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jeff,

Ciscoworks 2000 RWAN is a good package for monitoring Cisco Routers, beware
though it is a bit expensive. I use CW2K Device Fault Manager to receive
alerts/notifications from all Cisco devices and WUG for a simple up/down
notification.

You could simply make the routers send SNMP traps and syslog messages to
your WUG server, then configure WUG to notify you as appropriate for each
threshold or alarm.

Hi All,

Is anyone out there monitoring Cisco router errors? We have over 100
routers, if one goes down the alarm goes off, no problem. If one gets
errors on its port (from AT&T) but doesn't actually go down, the different
counters increment on the router but traffic isn't affected enough to stop a
ping. This means the router stays "up" to WhatsUp Gold, but the location
starts slowing down and the more sensitive applications drop connections.

Is there any way in WhatsUp or any other application to sound an alarm or
something when a router sees interfaces errors like this?

Thanks,
Jeff B
