NNTP?  I thought it is more or less as popular as Gopher nowadays.

Why not simply keep a web-based archive of all the postings?  Easy enough to
search through.

Best of both worlds (mailing list vs. forums), how bout' a port of the
mailing list to an NNTP format?  GMANE.org does it with many mailing lists.
