I did something similar and moved our maps to INI a while back for the same reasons you stated you moved to XML.

I could find no schema document and was told one does not yet publicly exist.L    If anyone know anything different, please let us know!

The unique ID’s are generated by the What’s UP software and are arbitrary.   You can use anything unique in there.   One BIG problem however is when you issue a Save of the map from the What’s UP exe all the ID’s are regenerated so you can’t count on them being unique per device.

I also found out that any custom keys you may of created in the map file will be erased as well.

Also changes made via outside means are not automatically refreshed into the system.   You must close the map (without saving) and reopen it to see the changes.

I am not sure if this all works exactly the same way in XML  but I would imagine so.     I have been told that there is some additional flexibility with using XML format but I am not sure what that is.

That is what I know about it so far.

Can anybody correct or enhance on this?

Thanks,

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] XML Schema & specs?

Hi,

I've just moved our WUG8 installation over to XML maps, so that we can do reporting and bulk modifications of map properties. This would be made a lot easier if there was an XML schema for the map files - does such a thing exist? I found this post from back in November 2001 that suggests it should exist: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01327.html

Above and beyond that, where do the unique IDs in the maps come from? and is it possible to add a device purely from the XML, outside of Whats Up? And where in a Subnet's XML does it tell you which map to load when you drill down into that subnet? There seem to be links up to parents, but not down to the children...

Sorry for the pile of questions, but I'm keen to be able to manage our monitoring a bit better than we currently do, and the manual appears to gloss over the more technical bits. Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed!

Best Regards,

Howard Jones
