try query express

it's a freeware "query analyzer" missing all those query optimizing tools. for just accessing the db it is just right, if you got the basics from sql

My understanding was that the desktop version that WUP runs does not allow network connections.  If it does then you are correct I can use Access from my desktop to get to it.  Does anyone know if you can get to the WUP database form a remote computer.

Thank You

The data is stored in an SQL database, you can query it from any
workstation with proper permissions.

Oh, but there we go again installing MS Office on a server.

For basic DB access MS Excel would work.

What other options are out there to connect to the database except
purchasing and installing MS Access onto one of my servers?  I have
found a few products that will let me view the database without a
large
program.  However I have not found one that will let me edit.

Thank You

Most of that information is in the table called Device in the
database.
It might be best for you to create a blank MS Access database and
then link the Whats Up database to that via a DSN.    Then you can use
the Device table just like a Access database and easily make queries
against it.

I would caution not to change anything unless you absolutely know what
it is.    I noticed the Device Type is a number in the database so you
need to find the corresponding number.

I was able to quickly create a query and change over 500 SMNP
communities this way in about 1 minute (the time it took to write the
query).

I think will some experience with the database,  the multiple select
issue becomes very minor. (IMO)

I just spoke with support and they have identified this as something
they are working on, hopefully for SP1.  I still need to modify the
properties of several devices at once, i.e. SNMP communities, device
types, actions, dependencies.

If there is anyone who knows the database way of doing this, then
please let me know.  I am not a DBA and really only work with
databases
in a limited way.  Please let me know how to do this.

I remember reading that some of this will be addressed in a service
pack.  Until then,  can't you access the database directly and make
multiple changes there en mass?

Also, how about the ability to change the properties of multiple
devices at once.  For instance, i am going through (1 by 1) and
changing
the devices types from the default of 'Workstation' to what they
actually are.  If I could select multiple it would save a lot of
time...

I would like to know if there is any way to apply an action or action
policy to multiple devices at once.  I need to apply the same action
for
up/down alerting to over 200 devices.  In WUG, you could apply an
alert
to multiple devices at once.  Where has that feature gone.
