If you have a switch you might be able to discover additional interfaces which would represent each individual port. Then when a port went up/down so would the corresponding interface. Might not need SNMP at all.
I am currently monitoring each of the individual switch interfaces, and getting the link status. I would just like to reduce my polling frequency, and add the snmp traps to get a more "up to date" status.
