that makes a lot of sense for 1.0 because we don't have time to fully think this through. eventually, i think some kind of mapping from friendly URLs to wicket URLs seems like a feature that ought to wind up with at least a good default implementation available in the core... seems like that could happen in 1.1 or later. let's just be careful to make the right changes to the core for now.

I'd propose that, if someone would implement this kind of functionality, that it should be put in contrib (or some other non-core project). That is, besided possible changes to core that makes it possible in the first place.

I'd like to keep it more open. Being a xml file (and your suggested schemata) just one option for keeping the config data. Maybe the default config reader provided with Wicket. Additional options I'd like to see - configurable: fromUrl case insensitive - regexs for fromUrl and $1 etc. for toUrl - configurable rules filter to select the rule which fits the pattern - configurable / extendable rules executor which creates the toUrl (regex like with $1 etc.) - optional id attribute and rules listeners fired if id matches the listeners id.
