There are lots of ways to contribute and no one keeps you from going a 
more relevant path.

I can, of course talk only on my behalf.
As much as I have sympathy for the 'all the way open source' path you 
described, the Google API just jumps at me from everywhere. Looking at 
it, it seemed to have the right steepness. Going that way I felt I could 
learn a lot and generate enough relevance for the effort I had to put in.

In short: Its just the most effective scratch to cure my itch.
