I think there are a lot of similarities between the gmap efforts and an openlayers one. Covering all of OL would be quite a lot so maybe one should just start out with a simple map-panel? What are the requirements for your project when it comes to mapping? I guess for the project to be self contained it would great to launch GeoServer and some sample data. I'll look into it.
