Hi Everyone, To paraphrase Newton: "If [WE] have seen [any] further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." The Wikipedia Usability Team have been doing amazing work relating to improving the user experience of wiki editors. ( http://usability.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page). This is an impressive research-driven project under the able leadership of Naoko Komura at WMF and thousands of users helping to test the system. Gee you gotta love the open source software development model thanks WIkipedia for sharing your knowledge!
One of the numerous feature enhancements is a new skin (user interface) called "Vector". Jim has being doing his usual magic behind the scenes and has a beta-test version of the Vector skin running on WikiEducator (Thanks Jim :-). ) The Vector skin has a much cleaner layout with better arrangement of the toolbox and clearer distinction of the page tabs, particularly for new users who may not be familiar with wiki editing. The look and feel is definitely more modern. We invite WikiEducators to try this out -- let us know what you think. Some pages, for example the User login and Book collection page ( http://wikieducator.org/Special:Book) may not display perfectly yet -- but in the traditions of open source collaboration we would like to our share progress with the WIkiEducator family. *Instructions for enabling the Vector skin:* - Log in and go to your User page. - Click on my My preferences - Click on the Skin tab (on the top of your display window) - Check the radio button for the "Vector" skin at the bottom of the list - *Note - After saving, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes.* *Mozilla / Firefox / Safari:* hold *Shift* while clicking *Reload*, or press either *Ctrl-F5* or *Ctrl-R* (*Command-R* on a Macintosh); *Konqueror: *click *Reload* or press *F5*; *Opera:* clear the cache in *Tools → Preferences*; *Internet Explorer:* hold *Ctrl*while clicking *Refresh,* or press *Ctrl-F5*. - You can go back to the default skin by repeating the process above, but check radio button for the MonoBook (default) skin in step 4 above. Save and clear your browser cache again. I really like the Vector skin -- uncluttered and more usable in my view. What do you think?
