There is an active social movement here connected somewhat with the Occupy Wall Street movement to roll back some of the student loan debt.  President Obama has done what he can from the executive side but the Congress is dysfunctional to say the least...at any rate you are right, as we assist folks with self-directed learning through the OER-u and PLA we can reduce tuition costs and student debt.  While we (this "we" is the OER-u) do our part, others will have to tackle the shameful state of funding for higher education in the US...which has always seen both higher education and health care as commodities for those who can afford them rather than as basic human rights.  In the meantime, public institutions like Empire State are struggling.  Public funding has been decreased while control has been increased.  I am sure we will continue to do our mission but it seems to be more difficult all the time.   Thanks for the references.  JMcK

You know what they say, when building new education futures -- you can't lead from behind. 

We have two outstanding US pioneers who will help the OERTen network in building more sustainable education futures.

From a social justice perspective -- our work is important because we will be able to help millions of learners who are currently excluded from the privilege of a post-secondary education. 

I was watching Cable Green's keynote at Open Education 2011 remotely. (Well worth a look and BIG thanks to Cable for the OERu reference in his address).  

I was astounded to learn that student debt in the US has now exceeded consumer credit.

Clearly we're busy with important work. 

Our international OERu collaboration will also be able to assist in widening access to more affordable education for US citizens. OERu learners based in the USA  will be able to receive accreditation in at least three regional accreditation jursidictions in the US by virtue of the relevant OERu anchor partners.

Founding anchor partners of the OER Tertiary Education Network will be convening in Dunedin, New Zealand on 9-10 November 2011 to plan the implementation of the OER university.  UNESCO and the Commonwealth of Learning will also be attending the meeting. 

With funding support from UNESCO, the planning meeting will be streamed on the Internet.
