Hi Romaine, please keep in mind that the target group for the upload wizard are mainly non-wikipedians and hopefully also people that are new to computers (e.g. 60-year-old hobby photographers), and those will be very confused by the usual forms. The upload wizard divides the upload process (that is a very natural thing to you and me and everybody involved with WLM) into small steps and therefore is easier to complete.
Wikipedians and especially those who will upload hundreds of pictures will rely on Commonist and other tools, they can categorize their uploads by hand.
