Hello everyone, We've looked in to this a bit more deeply, and as long as the student society is associated (or affiliated) with Wikimedia UK and isn't selling any products then there's no need to seek permission to use the marks. The Trademark Policy at http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Trademark_policy is the key document here and is quite clear on this, thankfully.
We're on good terms with the WMF, so if there are any trademark issues that the WMF contacts a student group about, try and let us know, and we can get in touch with the WMF during work hours and smooth over any difficulties.
