Harry,

This is a good question. There are a few points:

   - Firstly, these student societies will be set up by (and supported by)
the Chapter, and it's very unlikely that they would be legal entities
themselves - instead, they would be semi-formal groups with small budgets
that meet from time to time. These societies would fall under the aegis of
WMUK as far as the WMF is concerned, rather than being seen as a 'third
   party'.
   - Secondly, these groups would probably rely on WMUK for publicity
materials and funds for most, if not all, of their events. WMUK is
permitted to use its funds for any charitable purpose it sees fit, and WMUK
is also permitted to use Wikimedia marks in all of its related activities.
As a result, any funds and materials we give to the society would be just
the same as us giving funds or materials to a museum - or an individual
volunteer - to run an event about Wikipedia. This is not something we need
   permission for from the WMF.
   - Finally, student societies are not something that the WMF really want
to worry about. They are very small, semi-formal or informal, non-profit
groups with very little reach beyond their specific local area. The two
societies that have been running so far are ones that the WMF is aware of,
and they have raised no concerns or problems with their activities over the
past two years (to either them or us). We'll continue to keep them
informed, of course, and if the WMF thinks that a particular student
society has become to big, and now does need a specific agreement, we'll be
more than happy to assist both parties in any way we can.

As Chris says, lots of folks are at Wikimania now, so if anyone has any
specific questions, feel free to email me and I'll try and get some answers.

Many thanks, though, Harry, for bringing this up - it's important that
we're thorough.
