Interesting that these are two translation folks, and nothing from the

this doesn't represent our diversity very well.
True, but considering the fact that we had three candidates, this is the
most appropriate choice we could make.
I know it's too late now, but considering most of us probably never even
saw or considered the initial request as it was tucked away into another
email about something else, in the future it might help to send out a
separate email for these things, and if it comes to it, include a new
deadline in the reminder (otherwise the decision comes as a complete
surprise), too.
It is reasonable to expect that Wikimedia mentors eligible to a GSoC
Reunion ticket including flight and accommodation will follow GSoC news and
wikitech-l, and will be proactive communicating their interest and asking
the questions they have.
Communication can always be better but I don't think in this case was bad
for mentors in the loop:
# in May, there was an "Introducing the 10 year Google Summer of Code
Reunion!" announcement sent by Google, followed by reminders and
discussions in the GSoC mentors list
The Google introduction was nice, but didn't say much for what the
specific organisation was doing, or what it would mean to us within a
Wikimedia context. That's what we needed to know, and that's what should
have been in the main email.
# in June, there was in wikitech-l an "IMPORTANT: GSoC & OPW mid-term
evaluations" email with a first line that said "(If you are a Google Summer
of Code mentor, read till #The_end)".
The 'read till #The_end' thing made it sound like we were supposed to
stop reading at that point. Even assuming we ignored that and kept
reading, it wasn't a whole lot of information to go on, and given that
evaluations are a pretty huge thing all by themselves, you can
understand that we would have had... other priorities at that point.
# in July, there was a "Mentors participating in GSoC Reunion..." reminder
This is all most of us probably saw. By then it was too late, as it left
us only a day and a half to actually make a decision and sign up. Since
we didn't know it only gave us a day and a half because it didn't say,
who knows how many folks would have otherwise signed up after that.
# and in general, watching
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Mentorship_programs/Possible_mentors is
useful
Personally I never even considered it because as a new mentor it didn't
seem very appropriate for me to want to go ('delegate' is a very strong
word), but more on what it would have actually entailed in the email itself
would probably have helped others, too.
Google's announcements point to
https://sites.google.com/site/gsocmentorsummitstudentreunion/home . If
mentors have questions, they can always ask here or at the mentors list.
Again, what the thing is to Google is not always what it is to the
specific organisation.
Anyway, it is indeed too late now for any changes. Ideas for improvement in
2015 are welcome.
This is an idea for improvement - better, and specific heads up about
this - and one that at least two mentors are telling you right now. If
you're open to ideas for improvement for next year, why are you arguing
that, no, it was good enough, with this one?
