Well, the lead on this is Trevor - if you look at his message at
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitext-l/2012-February/000543.html:


"I will also confirm that we have no plan or intention to do any of the
following:
- Disable markup (plain text) editing
- Allow visual editing to mangle plain text documents
- Make significant changes to what Wikitext is and can do"

That seems to be pretty clear, and it's hard to get a higher position of
authority on this project than him.
