Scanners

I have boxes of 35mm film that I would like to scan.  I have a nice Epson 
plate scanner with a 35mm holder, but I have assumed that this Epson would 
not do nearly as well as a dedicated 35mm scanner.

I am about to purchase such a scanner, but...
I am told that the newest plate scanners do better than the dedicated 35mm 
scanners.

A little tutorial if you will:
Is the above true?
Which plate scanner would be sufficient to produce excellent family photos?
