Aloha Sir Hugh,

I don't have an answer, but I wish I did as I have a similar problem.
Sometimes the error message varies slightly - the memory can't be read.

I've tried strategy similar to yours in checking for viruses and other pests
using several different scanners with nothing found except ocassional 'junk'
found in unsolicited e-mail and quarantined/identified by my principle
scanners (Kaspersky and PestPatrol).

I've even removed my memory 'sticks,' cleaned the contacts, and re-installed
them - ensuring that they are properly seated - but that hasn't affected the
problem.

I did notice another anomily; sometimes when I try to delete a file, it
doesn't actually get deleted but the name gets changed to about 240
characters starting with "aaaaaaaa" and the remaining can be all "a"'s, or
"b"'s, or "c"'s, etc, depending on how many similar files already exist on my
various hard drives. This seems to me to be a failure of the system (Win2K
Pro) to 'clean out' the "long filename' entry in the directory (just a
hunch). I have to resort to using XPpe to delete thes files because if I try
to do it with just the Windows operating system components, the system hangs
so bably that I have to use the front panel "Reset switch" to reboot.

"System File Checker" has been run countless times and has found one, or two,
files that needed to be replaced, from time to time. And I run "QFE Check"
after every update and it's had me re-install a few security updates when
they didn't pass "muster". Mostly, though, my system runs well

I have also received some error messages from various applications, from time
to time, indicating their inability to erase some file or folder and advising
me to delete them manually using Windows Explorer. However, when I've
attempted to delete them manually, I couldn't find them! That indicates to me
that the program actually deleted 'it' but probably didn't wait long enough
to get the deletion acknowledgement back from the operating system. So that
seems to indicate a timing problem of some sort. I'm beginning to think that
my system is getting so "bloated" that it takes Windows overly long in
checking 'everything' on it's periodic system checks (again just a hunch)...

I've come to the conclusion that I should move some of my 'less used'
programs and attached peripherals to my second desktop computer (which is in
my spare bedroom and available for use by my house guests - it's also
networked to my main computer and my DSL modem) to lighten the load on my
principle computer. I don't know if that will help but we'll see in a few
months...

In the meantime, perhaps someone else may give us some valuable clues...

Have a wonderful day!

Aloha, a hui hou...
