Subject: Age old (at least 20 years) question; to turn off or not?

After years of dutifully turning off my computer after each use about a year ago I started leaving it on all the time. My > recollection is that I heard or read that stopping and restarting the mechanical devices was harder on them than leaving them > running.

I tell my customers that the moving parts have a 3 year life expectancy and the nonmoving parts have a 5 year life expectancy.

Leaving it on all the time wears out the moving parts quicker but is easier on the nonmoving parts.

Many businesses run their computers 24/7 and enjoy a long life of nonmoving parts. If you shut down a home computer daily after you finish using it for the day you are taking a balanced approach. Cold startups more than once daily on a regular basis are harder on a computer than just one startup on most days.
