Subject: Re: VGA driver
I have removed all traces of ATI from my system, installed a different ATI card and still am told to set my driver to standard VGA, but as of now, do not know how to set it to standard VGA.
All hardware runs from software drivers. You have to have some video drivers loaded to have video. Windows furnishes a minimal set of drivers for all video cards to allow you to have video in order to install the correct video drivers. Windows does not need to do this for other hardware such as a modem or sound card. You can start with an inoperative modem or sound card and install the proper drivers. The video card is one item that must work at a minimum level (you have to see) in order for you to go further.
If Windows does not furnish what Microsoft has on the Windows CD as appropriate drivers for full color video, then you get that minimal set of drivers installed which causes your video to show up in Device Manager as Standard VGA. This is just what you want and need if you have the correct drivers to install. In your situation (as most) you are instructed to start with Standard VGA drivers. So how do you get these? It happens for you automatically with plug and play as discussed unless--------
Microsoft installs a less desirable set of drivers that are on the Windows CD. Then your video card shows up by its name in Device Manager. This is the Catch 22. Automatically, you got what you did not want or need when Windows (or your new video card) was installed. You wanted and needed minimal drivers and you got a full set, but not the right ones.
From here I will pass it on to somebody with lots more knowledge than Iabout video drivers. They can help you (and me for my future problems) in getting rid of the full installation of video drivers by Microsoft so you can install the correct video drivers furnished by the video card manufacturer.
