So!
What happens if there is a serious fire in the admin building ..
such that the floors collapse down and the safe ends up on the lowest floor,
covered in hot rubble.

How soon will you be able to get the tapes from the safe?

And - how many days (in heated conditions) is the safe rated for the tape media?

Where I work (Prince George's Community College) my IT department has a local
off-site storage safe that's 25 cubic FT 500 LBS and
placed on the first floor of the administrative building. Speaking of which I
am responsible for the securing and inventory of the
entire backup of production tapes and software for the entire college. (Yes
this includes all employee and student records if you
were wondering).

Half of these tapes are mostly of the IBM 3490E variety and the other half are
SDLT IV 420s which comprise the entire SAN/LAN backup. Once a week I place 20
IBM 3490E tapes in a 3490E plastic clam-shell carry
case and secure them in the safe and daily backups along with them.

For security sake I am the only person who's responsible for securing them.
Only I and the manager have the combo to the safe in
case I am off on vacation. I know where and which tapes hold the data and for
me and my IT department this system works best for us.

This way if disaster should strike we can have instant access to the backups
within only 250 FT walking distance.

...which is why I object to collection of data on everyone, by everyone...

It all sounds so simple. You save your data to a tape cartridge. When you
have enough cartridges, you put them in a box and send them off to be
stored.

And yet, we can't seem to go a week without some company reporting
another -- usually boneheaded -- data loss. This time it's Time Warner
wearing the dunce cap: The media giant lost 40 tapes with personal
information on about 600,000 current and former employees as the tapes were
in transit to a storage facility. [more]
