Thank you Bob. While these methods would work what I was trying to do is
have Jim fix the Add/Remove Programs & once it's fixed then the install
will do the expanding of the appropriate files to the appropriate places.
Silly me thought I was making it easier but I had forgotten about having to
edit the c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf file & rebooting 1st. Also in the 1st
part of Jim's postings he mentioned that he couldn't find his Windows CD &
while I don't care if he has his Windows CD or not he'll at least need some
ones CD.

you need to copy the sndvol32.exe image from your commercial XP
installation media (not a vendor-supplied "recovery" CD-ROM) to the

2. Navigate to the CD-ROM drive by typing
<cd drive>:
3. Navigate to the i386 folder by typing
cd i386
4. Expand the sndvol32.ex_ file by typing
expand -r sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32
