GM Claudia -

You will likely get other suggestions, but since I am a strong advocate of
KISS, here is my procedure:

1. I like having XP SP2 on CD. I ordered a couple from MSFT (free) when it
first came available and find that preferable to downloading. Even on
satellite...

2. BACK UP ALL DATA AND DOWNLOADED PROGRAMS from the C:\ drive.

3. Make SURE your machine will boot from the XP Pro installation disk.

4. Format C:\

5. Put the XP Pro installation disk in the CD-ROM, boot, and follow
instructions.

6. Once installation is complete, install SP2.

7. Install appropriate AV and FW programs. I use Zone Alarm and AVG7, both
completely free, and have had no problems with them. Might want to
download/save them to file before starting the install.

8. Get updates for both AV and FW programs.

9. Go to Windows Update and update as appropriate.

FWIW, every machine I have has XP Pro on it EXCEPT 1. My wife's still has
Win Me on it and she threatens mayhem if I change it. I must admit it has
been very trouble free (Dell factory install from years ago) and she firmly
believes that "if it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!" Also, IMO, a good move in
going with Pro rather than Home; you have no doubt seen some of the recent
traffic re: Home and it seems well worth the extra $$ to go with Pro.

G'luck. It really isn't difficult once you have done it a couple of times.
;)

Subject: [WINHOME] XP set up from get go

OK, NO shouts of joy. I am moving up from ME to XP. In today's digest
there were some particular PW suggestions alluded to. Has anyone compiled a
brief list of steps to take when setting up XP Pro from the get go.
