OK, NO shouts of joy.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah but I didn't shout Joy, Joy <vbg>
I am moving up from ME to XP.
Why bother now when Vista will be out in a year or so?
In today's digest there were some particular PW suggestions alluded to.
I wasn't aware of any password suggestions made. Did I miss something on
list as oppose to something in general? ;-)
Has anyone compiled a brief list of steps to take when setting up XP Pro
from the get go.
How brief would you like it? On some systems all one has to do is insert cd
& boot the system while answering the appropriate questions correctly. I
don't know of any established or published list of how to as most people
have slightly different ways of doing things. Some people spend hours &
hours trying to make the process simpler. What are you starting with, Xp
Pro original disk or Xp Pro w/ Sp1 or Xp Pro w/ Sp2 ? Do you want down &
dirty or the best procedure?
The down & dirty way is to install over the top of ME. This will keep all
your data intact but any viruses & other problems that you maybe having
with ME are likely to be transferred to Xp.
The best way is to download all the drivers that you might need, extract
them [don't install] & burn that to a cd. Backup all your data & to be
extra cautious backup everything including Windows. Make sure that your
system can boot from a CD & then insert the Xp Pro Cd & reboot. Once there
you need to tell it to install to your C drive but to recreate the
partition as oppose to installing over the top. At various points during
the install it may ask you for a driver so take out the Xp Cd & insert the
driver Cd that you made then when they are installed reinsert the Xp Cd.
You may not be asked for any drivers during the installation process but
that does NOT mean that you have the latest drivers & they are usually the
most stable. Once into Windows install Sp2 if required & then install the
other drivers as you see fit. Now that the machine seems complete copy your
data back to the new system. The more complex the hardware the more complex
the install will be but not that much more. Xp is so much easier to install
than 98 or ME & runs so much smoother, imho, that it ain't even funny but
as always YMMV.
