I also thought MS would talk to an OEM user, but you START by paying them.

Humor here. Note that most anybody will talk with you if you start by paying them ------- enough.

Can you blame Microsoft for not wanting to tangle with problems, many of which the hardware, its configuration and how Windows was installed etc. could be the blame for the problem?

Not only do some OEM's alter the way in which they install Windows (including what they want using the Microsoft OEM Preinstallation Kit) Windows from Microsoft is the same stuff no matter who builds the computer. If you build your own computer and pay double the price for the Full version, Microsoft has already collected for some of the technical support you may require. If you purchase XP Upgrade it can legally be installed only on a computer with qualifying software on it such as Windows 98, 98SE or Me. I realize many kitchen table builders buy Upgrade to circumvent the high price of Full if they do things legally. I, a OEM, am bound by Microsoft rules to use only Full or OEM on a new computer I built and reserve the use of Upgrade to existing computers with installed operating systems that qualify them for the upgrade.
