Since he has Outlook 2003 - can you see them is in the unread folder? If he's
not using the mail pane, Ctrl+1 to show it. Unread Mail should be in the
Favorite folder list unless he removed it.
The first thing you should do when there is a problem is make a new profile
(works for like 75% of user complaints) - if he has multiple accounts, just one
is necessary for the test and don't delete the existing one. Let the new
account make a new pst. Does it work? If so then you can figure it's rules, the
junk filter settings or views (very common cause of "missing" mail problems).
In this case, it almost sounds like the profile is using some other pst (known
to happen with rules moving messages).
When you upgrade versions we always recommend new profiles, although it's less
necessary if you have ol2002. you can use the old pst, but with ol2003, we
recommend a new one and *moving* new mail, calendar, tasks and contacts to it -
leave the old one in as an archive pst until you no longer need to see the old
mail regularly.

Nope, that's not it either, no specialized views applied, no filtering for
the views applied. Using a standard profile. The mail downloads fine, it just
disappears between getting to the machine and making it into the inbox. :-(
