In my not so vast experience with SATA, I have found that connecting only
the SATA boot drives during a fresh installation seems to cause less
problems. WinXP always seems to want to put "something" on the PATA drive if
one if available (boot sector?).
And you need to make sure to have the SATA and/or RAID drivers transferred
to a floppy from the CD (if that is the only way they are provided) before
you install, and they press F6 at the beginning of the boot process to add
the drivers. I have successfully installed SATA RAID boot drives 3 times now
using this method.
