I had a couple of problems in the OS installation phase: first, the Win98 CD wouldn't start its setup routine although it is for systems without Windows (so it

Although my dual boot system does not have Windows 98SE on a virtual drive, my methods may give you some insight.

I partitioned my shop computer hard drive into 3 partitions. C is FAT32 and for Windows 98SE, D is NTFS and for Windows XP and E is FAT32 for data storage including cabinet files for Windows 98SE etc.

I first installed Windows 98SE on the first partition, Drive C. I did my updates etc. for Windows 98SE before proceeding. Then I installed Windows XP on Drive D. Windows XP set up the dual boot option for me on Drive C. Now, within Windows XP I can assign the default boot operating system to Windows 98SE or XP. I also have the operating choices screen set to 20 seconds to give me plenty of time to decide if I want the boot to be to the default operating system or the other.

Since then Windows 98SE developed problems and will boot only in safe mode. This is fine with me, as my requirements for this operating system can be met in safe mode. I am hesitant (dignified word for "scared") to reinstall Windows 98SE. I remember that Windows XP installed the dual boot system on Drive C and any tampering from the Drive C environment could mess this up. Then I could not boot to Windows XP. For this reason, I wish I had just used a 2nd physical hard drive for Windows 98SE. I will, next time I have to reinstall etc.

Although this may not relate to your virtual drive environment, it may help some who have interest in a dual boot system with Windows 98SE and XP.
