Did someone say hardwear failure??????????? Guess what - and I never suspected - Faulty DVD/CD RW drive but could it cause symptoms such as I described. Reset to basic look of new install of XP, all setting gone, no network, wipe out Norton and McAfee, hardly any registered progs working, my user deleted and opening only as Administrator. Could a faulty CD/DVD burner do this? Anyway - off to get a new one -- any advice as to what to get? DVD dual layer? DVD/CD single layer (very rarely burn DVDs but then might do the odd one now and again.
