I only have a retail CD. No Cd was provided with the PC initially. I'm
assuming they had some kind of hidden partition that the restore floppy
used, but thats no good when the entire hard drive crashes!
Find somebody who was provided a Microsoft OEM Windows XP CD with their
computer (they may be few, compared to those who were not, but they are out
there as some people had their comptuters built by a local builder who did
things legal) and use that Microsoft OEM edition. A Full version will not
work, nor will an Upgrade version, assuming Packard Bell installed from OEM
version cabinet files, along with the junk they added etc.
Note that you are one of those who is resisting the plan or arrangement of
your computer manufacturer. They complicate things to make you replace your
computer, not repair it, and at the very least spend more money with them on
it. They want you to purchase all replacement components from them, not on
the open market. They do not prepare you for them going out of business or
their lack of support, etc.
