Hi Lona,

Sounds like you got a tech that hadn't a clue.  It takes less than ten 
minutes to change a fan.  Generally the only settings in the bios 
would be to detect if the fan had stopped and the CPU overheating 
alarms.

That sounds like he went into the bios to underclock the CPU because 
it was overheating !  Underclocking would reduce the heating 
conciderably.

If the CPU had been damaged it is unlikely that the machine would even 
boot.

I think that I would find someone that knew what he was doing.  In 
terms of cost I would just replace a fan, say $3 to $5 plus labour.  
On the other hand a new heatsink with fan would cost a lot more, but 
would also have a new contact pad on it.

A clumsy engineer trying to change just a fan, could easily damage the 
contact pad !  If this happens, then the CPU will overheat very 
rapidly.  The over temperature alarm in the bios should warn you and 
close the machine down.
