There is another option on some wireless routers and that is to allow access
by MAC address, then no key is needed. I don't understand about MAC
addresses - but now no one else can use my signal if they don't have
permission to be on the network. Key is most secure - bit my network has as
its identifier our phone number and people do call to borrow it when
visiting neighboring offices with no wireless.
