I had cancelled the shut down before sending my message to the

immediately.

That sounds to me like you could increase caching of the icons.

==============begin copy==============
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]
"IconUnderline"=hex(0):03,00,00,00
"Max Cached Icons"="6000"

Save out as Iconcach.reg & then launch to incorporate the settings into your registry.

If I were you I'd use one of the many Xp Shutdown programs that have been discussed many time before on the list instead. I like http://grc.com/ GIZMO as it can control shutdown as well as screen resolutions & power down your monitor. I would create a shortcut for this on the desktop or start menu then you'll have many less clicks to shut down your system. OBTW you system still may hang if it needs to unload an app that you've been running which may or may not be windows fault.
