simple question from a simple mind

hi guys (and gals) - i am trying to edit my path in windows 2000, i type 
cmd and get a dos box, which lists my startup file but does not allow me 
to edit it. could someone more knowledgeable than me kindly shed a 
little wisdom my way regarding how to edit my path in dos or windows; 
and while we are at it, the same question, please, in win xp. too many 
machines, too many os's, at least i have one machine still using 98se, 
and i remember how to edit my path there. thanks
