James. 1.) You're correct. The Sony DRU-710A DL wrote the DVD-RW disk in packet burst mode at 4X speed. 2.) Using NG 10 making an Independent backup.
I have two packs of 30 DVD+R DL disk so I'll backup to those at 8.5 GB each cut down on the number of DVD disk to consume. Fear not I have Memorex DVD+R DL 30 pack which will preserve and keep the archives nice and fresh. OH and guess what! I just brought a new Sony DRU-810A DL DVD burner from Stapples on my lunch break for $89.94 with a $20.00 rebate for $69.94! I am going to install it tonight and realy burn-baby-burn those backups tonight at 8X - 16X and see how long it takes. ;) Marc Sims Data Technician I Prince George's Community College >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] Monday, November 14, 2005 >>> 8 hours for 15 CD's = 30 minutes each, so I suspect that: either your system was writing at 2 or 4 speed at the most, or 1) The system was writing those discs in packet mode, 2) Doing so with many updates to the directory and allocation areas If 1) I would sincerely suggest you copy those discs to ordinary -R media, or perhaps group them onto DVD media If 2) be very aware that most CD-RW media is only rated at 1000 rewrites on any part of the disc so copying them is even more important I also maintain a file with a set of MD5 checkvalues on my long term backups, as well as creating a set of PAR2 recovery files so I can tell where the data should be, recover from a few read errors, and check the consistency of the recovered file Also - remember CD's are easily damaged by a scratch on the top - you stand a chance of polishing out scratches in the plastic under-surface and with cheap DVD's the 2 plastic discs may start to separate and both are liable to damage in damp atmospheres where the recording dye can be eaten by fungal growth JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marc Sims" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 4:03 PM Subject: Software: Backing full volumes with NG 10. I was backing up my system with Norton Ghost 10 last night so that I can remove Windows 2003 from D: Partition and restore the system quickly. NG 10 already created the Images for partiton volumes C: Windows XP system and D: applications located on E: Data volume. I added another backup task to NG 10 to do a full independent volume backup of E: data which I started at 4:20pm and ended at 12:56 am 8 hours and took 15 CD-RW disks. I have 2 - 30 DVD+R DL packs and next time I'll use my set of DVD+R DL disk to reduce that number in half. I think the backup will still take 8 hours even set at its fastes setting. -- ---------------------------------------- The WIN-HOME mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software.
