Thanks everyone so far,
I have used ZAP and WIPE, (both from IBM) for cleaning up drives.
The partition was deleted by me intentionally, but the results were not
what I expected. When I get time, I'll WIPE the drive, (or, since WIPE
is old, at least the first 8.4G), and start all over...
I forgot to tell the whole story. I did the original factory install on a
different
wiped drive and then cloned that and played with the clone... I mentioned
TrueImage, but not what I did with it... (It seemed clear at the time...)

The reason for the question is: After the partitions were fooled
with, the computer rarely boots anymore. (But it still does
sometimes?.) The hardware boots fine from a floppy (win98) IF the HD
is disconnected...
Back to my first comment. I have had to use "Zap" on odd occasions to
remove funny markers left by partition adjustment tools, for just the
reasons you quote.
