I've had this happen to me before when I had to refresh my system just a week
back.
If you have all or some of your hard driver software or CD's you re fine and
good to go.
If not you'll need to first get access to the internet and get that router,NIC
or hub up and running
if you have the hardware drivers for the devices.
I've noticed that on almost all hardware OEM CD's there are directories for
each version of Windows or Linux
listed as win9x for Windows 9x versions, winnt for Windows NT 4 and WinXP for
both Windows XP Home and pro versions. Under these directories look for
subdirectores such as if the device is usb look for subdirectory named USB or
if its a router look for the model number and make sure that the model number
matches for your particular router or nic. The drivers for it are stored in a
subdirectory labled as the model number such as x:netgear\nic\winXP\Wg311 for
example.
Once you've find the location of the driver(s) go to Device Manager and
right-click on the hardware device with
the yellow exclamation mark and click update driver and the driver will start
the install process. Select have disk and install from location. If you get a
dialog which asks for a hardware signature verification for windows 2000 click
yes and continue anyway.
For the usb devices most in device manager may read USB hub controller or PCI
to USB 2.0 bridge controller you'd
right click on that item and click update driver. As for NIC it may read
brandnme Ethernet controller and do the same for that device as well. If you
don't have the CD or software avaliable for it use another computer that has
access to the internet download the proper drivers and burn it to CD.

I have a brand new system and I'm moving my XP/Pro world to it. Only
problem: all I get are "?"s on device manager for the Ethernet controller
[and a bunch of other controllers: USB, Video, PCI, SM Bus].
I'm not sure what to do next. I don't know exactly what hardware is on
the system [I just assumed I'd be able to load XP and have it leap to
life], and I can't do any sort of internet searches until I at least get
the Ethernet controller going.
