What size drive do you plan on getting - Will the BIOS on the system accept that size of drive If not have you checked if there is a BIOS update that will support larger drives Is there any other reason to get a bios upgrade Will the laptop boot from the windows CD
Does the system have a floppy drive - Other considerations If the laptop won't boot from the CD Consider using the other laptop available to you to create partitions on the drive, and load the CD image onto the drive in a pre-prepared partition, Possibly copy a working version of the OS partition onto the hard drive ( from a similar laptop - same model) I favour a (250Mb) DOS partition with system imaging/recovery/backup software so I can boot to that to take backups of the main OS partition Will you install the recovery console Will you install the SDK and other utilities from the CD What backup/partition management software do you have to put on this system What firewall/AV software do you have to put on this system Will you remove the userid called Administrator Will you take a backup of the initially installed, and userid/password protected system What printer definitions will you install Is the system to be connected to a LAN - AD managed etc. Will you have a 'user-data' partition separate from the OS Will the system be able to hibernate ( and require a hiberfil.sys file) Will you define a min size pagefile - will you set a max size for it If the system is not for you, will you keep a copy of the backup What user-id's and software is to be installed Oh! the list goes on - merrily, merrily merrily into the mire JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Poer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 8:04 PM Subject: Re: Look into Setup of laptop > So, now I am going to buy a new hard drive and I don't have the original > software that came with this laptop, but I do have a licensed version of > Windows98SE that will do.
