The computer has 98 SE. I tell people that I will copy and sell them a
Windows CD of the same version they have on their computer
Why would you need to sell them a Windows CD at all if they have a
valid installation. Then as an add'l service you'll pull their
existing key? Even these people had a restore CD the installation
files were there & you didn't have to sell them anything except the
service of pulling their existing key & how to extract the Windows
files from the restore CD. Some restore CDs are easier to pull the
raw windows install files than others but there hasn't been a one
that I could not do this with. That's the whole problem. You hate
restore CDs & while I'm not fan I don't sell them another copy of Windows.
I realize the post of yours I quoted is 4yrs old but I sincerely
doubt that you've changed your policy & you've even typed that onto
this list as if you're trying to convince us that your policy is the
best yet no one else in the past 10yrs has seen fit to do the same. I
wonder who's conscience you're trying to appease? Heck you've even
sent your work order to this list when this list is not a list for
mom/pop shops business problems but rather to help people to get the
most out of their existing machines. Sorry but we don't care about
your OEM business problems here.
When Microsoft quits allowing this carry forward (Windows and CPU
mated) upon installations of new motherboards, then I will begin
selling Windows XP OEM kits to get these jobs done. Until then I
will save the customer that $90.00.
The point is that in most cases people don't need a Andrews Computer
Services rebuilt machine so how are you saving them any money?
<IMNSHO> The new rule as you incorrectly stated & according to MSFT
is only for "the Windows Desktop licensing policy have been in effect
for the last 10years." The link you provided does NOT reference to
any MSFT site.
According to
<http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Microsoft_changes_OEM_license%2C_forcing_new_purchases_after_motherboard_upgrade>
Microsoft has recently made changes to the Windows license
agreement, saying that "An upgrade of the motherboard is considered
to result in a new personal computer to which Microsoft OEM
operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer."
I assume that their quoted material is from MSFT & even then it does
NOT state that "Windows and CPU mated" but specifically states mombo.
Wikinews goes on to state that
Microsoft claims it needs to have "one base component left standing
that would still define that original PC. Since the motherboard
contains the CPU and is the heart and soul of the PC, when the
motherboard is replaced (for reasons other than defect) a new PC is
essentially created."
What happens when one upgrades just their CPU? or just their mombo?
If it's as you claim if I upgrade my CPU then I need a new license
but that's not what any of this stuff states. I plan on upgraded just
the CPU on this system but I have no intentions of getting another
license but I am considering building a new system with a new cheapie
mombo & the old CPU in which case I plan on using another license. So
if you ask me it's the mombo with all it's integrated components that
decided whether a new license it required. If this is the case when
you call in the next time you take a CPU from a name brand machine &
put it in your favorite Asus mombos then you would be in violation
unless the original mombo is defective. The MSFT rep could ask why
you didn't send for a replacement mombo but I doubt that MSFT will
give you much trouble either way like they did before. All MSFT has
done is to somewhat & not completely clarify because they're MSFT
what constitutes a new machine.
Why volunteer information when on the phone with Microsoft? If they
were to ask me I would name each and every new component I am
installing and which ones are being carried forward. Upon my attempt
to authenticate I am sure the DNA of the rebuild job was sent to
them anyway. Perhaps that is why they do not ask when on the phone.
Again you're branching out as no one has stated anything in this
thread about getting the machines activated or calling MSFT.
