Hi Mark,

I am using Dragon naturally speaking version 8 to write this message. I can
also use this programme to control my computer. What I have found is that
speech recognition is good when dictating but is still slow when giving
commands especially during editing. For example, it is much faster moving
around in a document using the keyboard as opposed to using Dragon.

I suspect we still have some way to go before we get flawless speech
recognition like they show in the movies.

Subject: Re: The Future Of Computing?

MIT has been experimenting with interactive touchscreen computing for quite
some time.
Just think of it no more keyboards and mice to deal with in using data
input. We have speech
capability with PCs but its been used so far in a limited fashion such a
short dictation and cellphone
handsfree and other devices that have not yet been fully utilized but will
be very soon if not already.

I wish Microsoft would implement voice command and response in its upcomming
Windows Vista product to do most
of the mundane everyday stuff like open, close windows, copy files, send
e-mail ( I already have voice e-mail and video e-mail from Comcast HSI of
which I haven't used myself yet but will soon ;) execute programs, record
video, music etc.

I have used my ATI remote control in conjuntion with the AIW 9600 to turn my
computer on and off and open a few apps but that's it, but its not the same
as voice command and response where the voice controls every thing the
computer can run.

So that there will soon be a point in time when we will in the very near
future all we have to do is touch or speak the command and our PC's will do
the rest. ;)

The video on this page is rather interesting.

Maybe one day we'll all be using touchscreens like this
