Based on what you've told us so far, it could be many different things.

"She's done a safeboot" does not explain anything. It's what you do after a
safe mode boot that counts. Is the system still slow in safe mode? Has she
scanned with all of the antivirus and antispyware programs in safe mode?

The Performance and Processes tab of Task Manager (taskmgr.exe) are your
friends. Look for low amounts of Available Physical Memory, or large
numbers for Commit Charge Total. Look for Processes using high percentages
of CPU.

Does the hard drive light stay turned on continuously (or nearly so) while
the system is being slow? If so check in Event Viewer under System for
errors. A failing hard disk could cause the behavior you describe.

I've got Itunes installed but never use it. I'll have to try uninstalling
and see what happens.

Subject: Computer running slow

My friend's wife Dell Celleron 2.4 Ghz has been running very slow lately.
For example, she tried bringing up the calculater a few minutes ago by
clicking Start - Run - and typing calc. Took 50 seconds. Everything else
running slow as well though. She's done a safeboot. She runs 3 or 4
different spypware removal programs daily and AVG anti-virus. Uninstalled
programs not used, and even one she does (iTunes for her iPod) because
that was causing more problems than anything else. She didn't have to
reinstall iTunes though. She deleted the download, deleted the
directories, and even did a search looking in hidden and system folders to
look for iTunes and deleted them. It re-installed it's self on reboot.
Oh well, she did want it back. Just wanted to uninstall to see if iTunes
was the problem.

She doesn't want to put a lot of time into fixing it because she's getting
a new one in a month or 2 (not Dell or Gateway, something nice and
upgradable) but I'm getting it after she transfers what she wants to
keep. :)

Any ideas what might be wrong?
