Hello Rich -

Since at least the first of the year CompUSA (and quite likely other
vendors) has had the Compaq SR1610NX on sale for around US$200 and
occasionally less several times. They have also had similar machines with
slightly different model numbers in the same price range. These prices are
after ~$200 mail in rebates but I received the rebates in about 60 days with
no problem.

While many eschew mass produced computers, this one has proven to be more
than adequate for anything I do. Out of the box it came with: AMD Sempron
3200+, 256mb RAM, 80gb HD, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo, front panel built-in card
readers for the more popular formats, USB 2.0 connectors front and rear,
Firewire connectors, etc. RAM is dirt cheap now and I bought 2 more 512mb
sticks so am running with a nominal 1.25gb.

Seventeen-inch LCD monitors (and sometimes 19") can be had frequently for
~$160 now, so for <$400 one can have a pretty spiffy little set up.

I can't point you to a specific deal right now but have seen this sort of
thing a half dozen times in 2006.

...This is a Compaq, hance not a homebrew. But from comments by Diane
and Derrick, not a great deal at all. Besides it's a good 30 miles
away, and in "another state".

I have not even communicated with the guy. Wanted a quick barometer
reading on it, to see if I should even bother. Based on the comments
- will not.
