I spent a frustrating 4 hours last week with a machine I assembled last week with this very problem. Abit mobo had an NForce 4 chipset. Hard drive was Maxtor SATA. Mobo mapped the SATA as an IDE device and could install without a driver diskette (which surprised me). Had it examine drive forever, finally got it to instal but on soft reboot drive led came on and stayed on with system stuck. Then tried to install mobo drivers and it remains at booting XP screen. Basically this appears to be a bug in the maxtor firmware for some of their SATA drives. There is a conflict with NForce4 chipsets and the Maxtor SATA drives take too long to complete init sequence. Windows itself will time out and nothing happens. Typicxally a hard reboot (turn off power switch on power supply) will get the drive to init (sometimes) but a soft reboot will fail. You can get details via Google. You need to contact Maxtor for updated firmware. -- Gerard R Thomas Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] PGP Key IDs: RSA:0x9DBCDE7D DH/DSS:0xFF7155A2 -- ---------------------------------------- WIN-HOME Archives: http://PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM/archives/WIN-HOME.html Contact the List Owner about anything: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Official Win-Home List Members Profiles Page http://www.besteffort.com/winhome/Profiles.html
