I think it depends :)

Hitachi SATA2/300 drives are shipped as SATA150 compatible and you must run
a program to change them to SATA2/300 compatible at which point you are
warned that if your motherboard or adapter is NOT SATA2/300 compatible, you
will lose access to your hard drive and will have to find a SATA2/300
compatible board to change them back again. 

On the flip side, SATA150 drives work (at least on my Gigabyte mobo) just
fine on the SATA2/300 interface. Just my experience to date.
