Two problems with using RW media in 'hard drive mode'

Firstly, different software 'manages' the space using different 'format' and
'space' management
The disc may look like a FAT partition, but that's because the software
'managing' the drive presents the data as a FAT partition to explorer
(That's why Nero can have problems reading discs created by Roxio in 'packet
mode'

Secondly, the discs usually have a life of 1000 rewrites - and every file
you add, delete, or change usually involves a change to the space allocation
information, or the directory information held on the disc, so writing 500
files individually can be expected to re-write the part of the disc
containing the space allocation information.

Think of a disc as an A4 notebook
each page having a header, and the entire set of pages being accessed
through an index held on the first few pages -
It's up to the person starting to use the notebook how many pages they use
for the index ( 1, 2, 4 - 6 whatever), and what they put into the headers on
each page (3 - 4 digit page numbers decimal or binary), even how many lines
are used for the header
So - when the managing application reads the index, is the page number the
first or last thing on the line
and when you get to that page, does the information start on line 2, 3 4 or
where?

I'm having the same problem and to add further confusion - why does erasing
files pose a problem for RW formatted DVD's or CD's?
The format allows one to create / delete / move files as one does on a hard
drive.
Which is why I just love using DVD+-RW format.

Windows native build-in format for these disks wont allow you to delete 1
file out of many, but Nero INCD will, which is I believe is the source of
all the confusion.

INCD was working on the new puter, then for no apparent reason my old disks
became full - ie I couldn't record nadir. On the old puter I had no problem
with the same disk. My new machine is using the trial version 64-bit
edition of XP - free to download, and otherwise working fairly well for a
trial OS.

I upgraded specifically to do this! Here is my system summary.
OS Name Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional x64 Edition
Optical drive : LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S
Display Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
Motherboard : GA-K8N-SLi
Chipset : nVidia nForce4 ICP
Giga-Byte Technology nForce4 PCI to ISA Bridge
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Any suggestions would be greatfully received.
