You know it's horses for courses:

I think AOL has the most subscribers these days(?).
I seem to remember that ICQ at one point had the most users but I
haven't logged on to that service for years - it seems like newbies
invariably choose AOL or MSN.
I read a great review a while back of MSN's Video Conferencing so that
might sway things for you if you have or plan to get a webcam.
I always found Yahoo Chat a little clunky.

I personally use nothing but Google Talk these days as we block all
other chat protocols at work. We leave Google Talk alone (for now) as
it has no File Transfer capabilities. It is very basic but ties in to
Gmail which means you don't have to install a client if you're not at
your PC. It may be too basic for your daughter however :)

Alex,

Thanks! That gives me a great start. I may be asking a dumb question (but
there are no dumb questions, right?), but the IM service is independent of
the ISP? In other words, I could choose AIM even though I am not (shutter!)
an AOL subscriber?

Any favorite services or services to avoid? Just looking for a cheap way to
communicate without astronomical phone bills.

Thanks, again,

Jim Maki
