Jim.

Since you've ceated the recovery DVD's its safe to delete the recovery
partition
assuming you made backups of all of your data.

Starting from scratch is sometimes a good option when Win XP acts flakey,
studders
and is slow to startup not only due to too many bloated apps running in the
system tray
but most likely spyware that cloaks itself as anti-spyware or pop-up adware
blockers such as
Google Toolbar is notoriuos for loading spyware on anyone's system.

Norton Ghost can copy partitions and their type (win32,NTFS) size
configurations and file systems while formatting the hard drive leaving the
file systems intact so that you don't have to go through the tedious two step
process of formatting and partitioning the hard drive the way you like. Ghost
does this in one single step but remember if you should copy your hard drive
make sure the source drive is the same size as the target drive. It realy helps
if the target drive is bigger than the source.

Before I proceed, I have several questions;

1) With the recovery DVDs created, can I safely delete the recovery
partition? I assume yes, but assuming always me worry. I just want to be
able to get back to a factory fresh setup in case I completey FUBAR the
system.

2) Is wiping and starting from scratch a viable option? The system came
installed with Windows Media Center 2002. I have a maps subscription and WMC
2002 and 2005 OEM as well as Win XP pro available. I know some support the
automatic format and install from scratch while others endorse the "clean
the system" approach. Just looking for pros and cons for each approach.

Thanks for your sage advise,

Jim Maki
