Hi all,
Thought some of you would appreciate the following series of events that resulted in my MB replacement and successful re-activation of Win Xp SP2 with no re-install.

Installed replacement Motherboard

Previous motherboard: Abit NF7-S -was going south. Keyboard and Mouse connections stopped working some time ago – switched to USB connections. Lately, experienced several freezes of mouse for no apparent reason.

New MB – Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 – Nforce3 250GB Chipset
(Had to replace CPU with Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 – Venice Core -90nm)

Had called Microsoft Support to ensure that replacement of Board would not mean a reinstall of Win XP Pro. They concurred and said that a phone call was all that would be necessary.

Booted up PC, which defaulted to the DVD/CD notwithstanding I had set the boot order in the BIOS to start the HD first. Used newly XP CD created with slipstreamed SP2. Got non-system disk message.

Rebooted with original Win XP Pro CD which asked eventually asked if I wanted to install the original Windows XP software. I said no, and I believe there was a check box there to upgrade. Upon doing so I got Windows screen telling me to call MS-Support (with phone numbers for each country) which I did. The lady asked me to read out the series of 8 groups of numbers on the message window which did not show on my screen under Step 3 apparently because my Windows XP Pro was an OEM version. She transferred me to another department who informed me that since it was OEM Windows XP version, I would have to set up a conference call between them, my component / Win XP Pro supplier and MS Support in order to get a new install Key. (So much for the – no problem promises when I first spoke with MS Support).

Got fed up – hung up when next higher tier of support would not answer my call – and rebooted. Went to BIOS settings and found that my HDD0 had disappeared. Only the CD drive was listed.

I re-set BIOS to recognize the hard drive and to again boot from that first.

PC booted and it almost got to my normal desktop but got the same windows activation screen as before, with the one exception that this time I did get the 8 series of numbers in Step 3.

Again called the listed MS Support number and this time got an automated voice asking me if I wanted to reactive Win XP Pro using this series of 8 sets of numbers, to which I responded yes. I then read out the series to the computerized voice, and got a pleasant ding-a-dee-ding sound after each series I read. When the complete set was read, the voice said to enter the following replacement 8 sets of numbers in the boxes on the screen. They requested confirmation after each of the 8 entries. Following this procedure, the re-activation was confirmed and everything worked fine. (Well I did have to go to Gigabyte to get a Driver for the on-board Ethernet Controller, but that was not a Windows problem).

I later had to re-register Office 2003, which went without a problem.

All systems now working fine. FYI
